Claims of ‘global warming’ are more than meets the eye
What do General Electric, academics that embellish research, Al Gore, ethanol hoaxers, the Obama regime and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have in common? They all belong to the new age religion of global warming, whose membership drive has been nonstop in our schools and universities and all over our media. The global warming push is one of increased governmental control of us wee citizens and is driven by pseudoscience and plenty of scare tactics.
Remember the claim that global warming was causing polar bears to die by being stranded on ice blocks? This iconic moment in global warming hysteria came from two main sources. One was the Al Gore road show PowerPoint with a photograph of hapless bears stranded on a miniscule ice island.
The second was a peer-reviewed study by scientist Charles Monnet of the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, whose work was later discredited completely. Why? It turns out the “peer review” was from Monnet’s wife, Lisa Rotterman, as well as a pal of Monnet’s, Andrew Derocher from the University of Alberta in Canada.
The study itself inferred that polar bears had died from ice melting caused by global warming. The researchers observed four drowned bears from a plane 1,500 feet in the air while on a 2004 survey of bowhead whales. The drowned polar bears appeared after a harsh Arctic storm, leading to the scientists’ speculation that the deaths resulted from global warming. When asked exactly how global warming kills bears that can swim 50 miles a day, Monnet had to shrug and say, “I don’t know.” In the end, Monnet had to come clean in the investigation, calling his own research “sloppy.”
The scientists never bothered to recover the bodies to determine the cause of death. The key statement made by Monnet was that “drowning-related deaths of polar bears may increase in the future if the observed trend of regression of pack ice or longer open-water periods continues.” As a result, polar bears were added as a protected species under the Endangered Species Act, even though they are likely not endangered.
Then there is that alarming picture of polar bears stranded on a small piece of ice, brought to us by Al Gore where he said “Their habitat is melting ... beautiful animals, literally being forced off the planet. They’re in trouble, have nowhere else to go.”
This, too, was a hoax. As it turns out the picture was taken in August when every year the fringes of the Arctic ice cap melt. The photographer, Australian marine biology student Amanda Byrd, didn’t think the bears were in any jeopardy. Denis Simard of Environment Canada agreed.
“You have to keep in mind that the bears in the photograph are not in danger at all,” he said.
While this is a perfect picture for climate change fundraising, you have the impression they are in the middle of the ocean and they are going to die, but they were not that far from the coast, and it was easy for them to swim to the shore.
With regard to the global warming industry claiming polar bear populations are shrinking and sliding into extinction, it seems the polar bears did not get the email. Nor did they see Gore’s slide series and his brilliant thesis that “The Earth has a fever.” Polar bear populations are stubbornly defying doomsday predictions.
For example, two populations are holding steady or growing when environmentalists declared they were in rapid decline. One is in Hudson Bay, where the prediction of a reduction to 650 animals has held steady at 1,000 bears. In another area called Davis Strait, polar bear populations have swelled from 850 to 2,100 today. Even Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has said polar bear populations have grown from a low of 12,000 bears in the 1970s to more than 26,000 today.
What’s up with the ice melting or not melting? In 2007 scientists presented one of the most dramatic forecasts yet for the disappearance of Arctic sea ice. Their 2007 state-of-the-art models and studies claimed that northern polar waters would be ice-free in summers within just five to six years. Well it is five to six years later and guess what? Even the new IPCC report shows that the world has entered a period of global cooling, including a 60 percent upswing in northern ocean ice from last year to this year, almost a million square miles more than predicted.
The Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific has remained blocked by pack-ice all year. More than 20 yachts that had planned to sail it have been left ice-bound and a cruise ship attempting the route was forced to turn back.
To paraphrase Dwight Eisenhower’s famous saying: “Beware the environmental government complex.” Just follow the money trail. Environmental groups get research grants, governments get to pass schemes like carbon taxation and we get stuck with the bill. Do your own research and remember, they may not be telling the truth.
