PBS gets pummeled for showing balanced global-warming piece

Written by Thomas Richard, Environmental Examiner.

wattsAnthony WattsThis past week, PBS NewsHour aired a piece on climate change, a.k.a. the theory of man-made global warming, only to find itself in a hailstorm of criticism from NOAA (a government agency, natch) and just about every left-wing blogger on the internet.

Not only did PBS have the temerity to show a balanced piece, but to the horror of warm-mongering alarmists everywhere, it highlighted a portion of NewsHour of a 'pragmatic skeptic,' and showed the full interview/transcript on its site.

One would think in this enlightened age that challenges and vigorous debate to politically ascribed science would be welcome. You'd be wrong because man-made global warming has now become the 11th Commandment.

To borrow a line from the film "King Kong," global warming is the 8th Wonder of the World! But after PBS had to issue a statement due to the vitriol aimed at them by certain extremists over a well-balanced piece, is it any wonder why the main-stream media is so loathe to show the dissenter's voice?

The very popular skeptic PBS interviewed was Anthony Watts, who runs one of the most-viewed sites on climate issues. While much of his interview ended up on the cutting-room floor, that still wasn't enough for the warm-ologists.

The alarmists were shocked and dismayed that NewsHour interviewed him in the first place because he was referred to PBS by the conservative think-tank Heartland (of which he receives no money from them to run his site). PBS eventually bowed to the pressure and issued a statement on the piece, basically apologizing by not apologizing.

All of this left the extremists foaming at the mouth, so to speak, even though Watts admits throughout the full interview that a. The planet has warmed over the past century, and b. Man is likely a contributing factor but it's been overstated.

What really counts in the overall picture is that, we have some real environmental issues and land-use problems to address. Whether global warming is real and/or caused by humans is pointless. The worry over global warming, compared to clear and water, soil loss, estuary and reservoir silting, etc is like focusing on the paint job on a sinking ship.
