1970's Global Cooling documentary
The video below is a documentry from the 1970s about the predicted coming ice age. For those of you who don't know, the news stories in the mainstream media throughout the 1970s was very similar to the ones today. Except this time, the looming disaster wasn't global warming; it was global cooling! Just like today the media repeatadly ran scare stories about how the human race was in danger from an impending ice age.
The documentary below is an example of the types of stories that were shown in the media all the time. Back then it seems that the 'scientific consensus' was concerned with global cooling. The documentary shows interviews with some scientists who genuinely believed that the planet was about to head into an ice age. What is interesting is that, Stephen Schneider, who is featured at the end of the video, later completely reversed his reviews from a global coolist to a global warmist.
There is a lot we can learn about the global cooling scare of 30 years ago. The majority of the video doesn't actually focus on the science of the 'coming ice age' a lot of it is simply stating what the effects will be, e.g. glaciers, advance dramatically, Manhatten covered by ice. Much like today's media, a lot of the evidence for the supposed ice age, was simply record cold weather events that were happening around the world, whereas for today, record hot weather is used as 'evidence'.
From 1940 to 1975 temperatures dropped, which provided the empirecal basis for the media reporting global cooling stories.
Then suddenly from 1975 to 2001, temperatures rose slightly. The media changed it's views, and the threat was global warming.
The media plays a huge role in people's attitudes and beliefs. In the 1970s the threat was a coming ice age; and general people didn't think to question it.
Now the threat is global warming and what most people know of this is mainly through the media, so once again they don't question.
You see the climate is aways warming and cooling. Just because temperature fell, it doesn't mean we're about to head into a new ice age, and just because the temperature rose it doesn't mean the planet is about to burn to hell.
The climate has always changed and will always continue to change. Physics Nobel prize winner Robert Laughlin has summed it up perfectly:
"The geologic record suggests that climate ought not to concern us too much when we’re gazing into the future, not because it’s unimportant, but because it’s beyond our power to control." - Robert Laughlin
Anyway, enjoy the documentry.
Below it is another video which perfectly summarises the global cooling scare, Global Cooling: The Coming Ice Age.
